At Re|Focus, Riverdale Global Will Highlight the Zero-Waste Benefits of Its Sealed-Drum System as Well as Energy-Savings and Other Sustainability Benefits of Liquids

ASTON, PA, U.S.A., April 13, 2016: A system for supplying liquid colors and additives in drums that stay sealed from their delivery to the plastics processor to their return for refilling provides substantial sustainability advantages over standard systems for liquid colors and pellet concentrates, it was announced today by Riverdale Global. At this month’s Re|Focus Recycling Summit and Expo, the company will highlight the zero-waste benefits of this system, as well as the energy savings and recycling improvements provided by colors and additives in liquid form (Booth 1613).

Riverdale Global’s Sealed Color™ system utilizes a patented “Pump in a Drum®” design, which enables the drum to remain sealed during delivery to the molding or extrusion company, metering into the process, and return to Riverdale Global for refill. Besides doing away with the complications of handling liquid color, the Sealed Color system eliminates unnecessary packaging, such as the non-reusable containers from other liquid color suppliers and the gaylords and pallets used for pellet concentrates. Such traditional packaging entails disposal costs and typically ends up in landfills.

A sealed-drum supply system for liquid additives, which Riverdale Global calls GlobalPlus™, provides the same environmental benefits as the Sealed Color system.

“Riverdale Global’s sealed-drum concept not only puts an end to unnecessary packaging and disposal costs but also eliminates the waste of residual colorant or additive in containers by blending them in with identical material during refilling,” says Kevin Cabana, vice president of process technologies. “In addition, liquid colors and additives by their nature disperse more readily in polymer than concentrates, exhibit better flow at lower temperatures and screw torques, and take less time for purging. This enhanced processability means greater productivity, lower energy consumption, and reduced scrap.”

Other sustainability benefits are attributable to the functions specific to additives in Riverdale Global’s GlobalPlus product range. Slip agents, nucleating agents, and antistatic agents all contribute to energy savings, for example, while light stabilizers, antioxidants, and flow modifiers help to enhance recyclability.
